MEMORIAL DAY: SNCAC PROCLAMATION
On Memorial Day, we honor military service men and women who lost their lives in the line of duty. On Veterans Day, we salute all those who served in the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day originally began in 1868 as 'Decoration Day.' The holiday called for the beautification of the graves of soldiers and sailors who fell during the Civil War. The holiday commenced with the arrangement of befitting services and testimonials; the flag display; and choicest spring flowers at grave sites; and,

WHEREAS, We today again give due honor to fallen troops, there is another important group of Americans that deserves our recognition and gratitude on Memorial Day. That group is Gold Star families. These families that lost loved ones in military defense of America’s principles.
Gold Star families, and all families that lost loved ones in military conflicts, made a sacrifice for our country-- losing sons or daughters. Those families have earned our nation's admiration for the courage they’ve shown in the face of such suffering, and for their unwavering devotion to the principles of individual liberty and representative government, and WHEREAS, On Memorial Day we join our grateful nation in honoring and remembering fallen American troops, LET IT BE FURTHER KNOWN, Sarasota National Cemetery Advisory Committee and Sarasota National Cemetery recognize the sacrifice of the families of U.S. troops that gave their lives.
